Cultural Connects Festival

When a community changed, we built a way for neighbours to meet.

The challenge: A small community of fewer than 5,000 people, part of a region of 15,000, was welcoming a large influx of newcomers in a short span of time. Rapid change can breed distance, misunderstanding, and racism when neighbours don't know one another. The need was urgent and human: create a safe, welcoming space for people to meet, share, and belong, and reduce the tension that grows in its absence.

The big bet: Don't run a program. Throw a festival. We bet that the fastest way to break down barriers wasn't a workshop or a committee - it was food, music, story, and a whole community in one place, together, for a day. Joy as a strategy for belonging.

What we did:

  • Designed and produced the festival end to end: concept, creative direction, programming, partnerships, and logistics

  • Secured $40,000 in grant funding and raised a further $25,000 through business partnerships and sponsorships. A $65,000 community event built from the ground up

  • Programmed 13 main-stage performances, 20+ cultural vendors, food trucks, and a full day of family programming

  • Created welcome packages for newcomers and their families, connecting them directly to local organizations, services, and supports

  • Made space for stories — neighbours learning who lived next door, and why it mattered

The results:

  • More than 1,000 people attended, in a community of fewer than 5,000. A turnout of over 20%.

  • Newcomers left connected to real resources and real people, not just a pamphlet

  • A day that replaced distance with familiarity, and suspicion with welcome

  • A repeatable model for using culture and celebration to build social cohesion

This is what we do: take a hard, human challenge and answer it with something bold, creative, and built to last, and secure the funding and partnerships to make it real. Big bet. Bigger results.
